Our Story

Community Connections-Berks, Inc was established in 2019.

A vision became seeds planted in 2013 when founder Nicki Habecker, teachers, administrators, and students came together to discuss the importance of inclusion. Through a grant Nicki Habecker secured from The Arc of PA, Mikayla’s Voice came to Daniel Boone Area School District to share a message of friendship, kindness, and that there is always a way to include someone. A message that is the foundation of our Community Connections family.

While Nicki’s son was in the eighth grade another grant was secured to create an art project, The Wheels of Friendship Mural. Together, the students brainstormed and developed a keyboard (based on Joshua's love of music and his keyboard). Students with and without disabilities shared what they considered to be the Keys of Friendship. Joshua’s wheels were painted and became the keys. The members of the project were recognized and dedicated the mural to the Daniel Boone Area School District. It continues to hang in the Middle School Cafeteria reminding middle schoolers daily of the importance of inclusion, kindness, and friendship.

Connections was born.

Transitioning from middle school to high school; students, teachers, and administrators reignited and strengthened Connections. Nicki knew that Joshua and his friends were quickly approaching graduation. Nicki was committed to continuing her vision for inclusion, value, and belonging in the community (Not only for Joshua, but for all people). She invited young adults of all abilities, families, teachers, administrators, and community members to have a conversation about what they wanted for loved ones, friends, and community as they transitioned into adulthood.

From the initial conversations, members continue to create what we want, need, and what works. We are Community Connections.

Together, we ARE making a difference! Together, we ARE community! We continue to evolve and grow. We now have members from across Berks County and recently became a 501c3.
